Welcome to Amadeus Manor, the restaurant that caters to classical cuisine. Here you will find some new classics, and some fresh interpretations of old favorites as well.

—A Backround Note—

Construction started on this former four-story home in the fall of 1921 by Mr. G. L. Shearer, but the stock market crash halted all work in 1929. The building stood partially completed until Mr. Earl McInnes, manager of the Multnomah Hotel, purchased the property and completed construction in 1941. The estate was then named Fernwood Manor.

Mr. McInnes and his wife, along with several Japanese servants, resided in the Manor until World War II, when the servants were interned. It is reported that Mrs. McInnes became very lonely after this, and in 1943 persuaded her husband to sell Fernwood to Mr. Ernest H. Aebi, a Swiss-born chef. Mr. Aebi loved the woodsy setting and the rock construction of the building, it reminded him of his native Switzerland.

Chef Aebi, well-known owner of the L'Abbe Restaurants in Portland, as well as the Dorchester House at Ocean Lake, and one of the founders of the Chefs de Cuisine Society of Oregon, moved in to make it a lovely family home, where Ernest and Jewell raised their three sons, Ernest, Fred, and Ken. In November of 1961, when illness overtook Mr. Aebi, they acquired permission to turn the building into a dinner house. Chef Aebi died in 1963. His widow, Mrs. Jewell B. Aebi, carried on in his tradition until 1974.

During 1974, two restauranteurs purchased the establishment and renamed it the "Fernwood Inn." The current owner, Kristina Poppemeier, an Austrian native and owner of Lake Oswego's prestigious Amadeus Restaurant, acquired the Fernwood Inn during the spring of 1994. With the sylvan and romantic setting, Ms. Poppmeier believed it would be the perfect setting for "Amadeus Manor."
